Things to Watch Out for in Auto Transport

When you're looking into auto transport, there are several key things to watch out for to avoid being taken advantage of by companies that seem reputable but aren’t as reliable as they appear. One of the first things you need to know is that many of the big companies you'll find online pay a small fortune for fake reviews. At our company, we’ve been in business for over 13 years, and we know we can’t compete with businesses that flood the internet with hundreds of fake reviews each month. We don’t ask our customers for reviews, but if you’ve left one, we truly appreciate it!

Let’s also talk about those articles you see that claim to feature the "Best Auto Transport Companies on Forbes," "Top Picks on Bob Vila," or even those “fake” consumer report sites. The truth is, most of these articles are paid for—sometimes for as little as $500—and are often written by contributors who work for big magazines like Better Homes and Gardens. These so-called "reviews" are actually just marketing schemes designed to make you think these companies are trustworthy when, in reality, they’ve simply paid to be listed. Even well-known publications like Forbes can feature these paid articles. Don’t be fooled—those rankings often have nothing to do with genuine customer experience and everything to do with a company paying for exposure.

In fact, one company that heavily advertises on Google is actually a fake consumer review site. For around $2,000 a month, you can pay them to feature your company as one of their "Top 10" picks. This scam is widespread across multiple industries, so don't let a polished website trick you—just because it looks legitimate doesn’t mean it is. The reviews you see there are often completely fabricated.

We always advise our clients that when they’re checking out Google Reviews, sort the results from "worst to first." It’s an easy way to get a better sense of the company’s true reputation. As for Yelp, big companies can’t manipulate those reviews. So, take a look there to see what people are really saying. For example, one of the largest auto transport companies out there claims to be number one, but if you check their Yelp page, you'll find thousands of negative reviews. Another company that ranks high on Google even has reviews about cars catching on fire. It's not all sunshine and roses, so don't let those flashy ads fool you.

Some companies even ask you to pay a deductible if they damage your car. If you leave a negative review, they might try to bribe you to change it in exchange for a gift certificate to restaurants.com. It's all part of a strategy to buy your silence—but the truth always comes out.

Now, let’s talk about the infamous "Paul" situation. If you’ve ever received a call from a telemarketer who says a driver named "Paul" is “right in your area” and can pick up your car in 24 hours, be warned—Paul is essentially the auto transport equivalent of Santa Claus. He’s always nearby, but he doesn’t actually exist. These telemarketers use "Paul" to make you think that your car is about to be picked up, but when the pickup doesn’t happen as promised, you'll realize that Paul was just a figment of their imagination—used to get you to commit.

Another thing you’ll encounter is cheap rates. When we give you a quote, we’re not just pulling a number out of thin air. We’re carefully looking at the average rates that carriers are accepting at the time. As experienced brokers, we know exactly how much to offer a carrier, similar to how an experienced realtor knows how to price your home. The company you call may sound like they set the price, but in reality, they’re just making an offer. The lower the offer, the less likely a carrier will accept it.

You might ask, “Can they really do that? Isn’t it illegal?” Sadly, no one is monitoring this behavior, so yes, they can—and they do—offer cheap rates to get you to book, only to increase the price later. Worse yet, once the carrier shows up, they may ask you for more money, and that company you booked with will suddenly say, “Let me call you back.” Meanwhile, the carrier has your car and will put it in storage if you don’t pay the amount they negotiated directly with you. If you ask, “Can you beat this quote I got from so-and-so?” you’ve just shot yourself in the foot. Out of 10 quotes, 6 are likely to be dishonest. Throw out the lowest quote and proceed from there. We’ll never do that to you. We always provide a copy of the contract signed by the driver, so you know exactly what is owed when the car is delivered. Our carriers will never ask for more money.

We don’t make money from the carriers like some competitors do. Instead, we charge a fee to connect you with the right carrier. We don’t care what the driver is paid—we just make sure you're quoted a fair price. Our quotes are typically within $100 of the final price. Once you book, we put that agreed-upon price in writing and ensure you understand what you're getting. Once a carrier accepts, we assign them to your shipment and give you their information. This process usually doesn’t happen on the first call, but for easy routes, we can typically find a carrier within 1-3 days. For harder routes, it may take 7-10 days. The more you’re willing to offer, the sooner you'll get picked up.

Booking months in advance doesn’t necessarily save you money. Most carriers won’t call until your car is actually ready for pickup that day. That’s why we ask for a pickup window. Auto transport isn’t like booking an airline ticket—you can’t schedule months in advance. A carrier has to be available when you’re ready, at the right price, and with enough cars heading in that direction. If any of these factors don’t align, your pickup will be delayed. By quoting correctly, we can minimize delays. If your price is too low, trust me—your car won’t get picked up at all.

Now, we know how stressful it can be when carriers wait until the last minute to accept a car. It’s stressful for the customer, and honestly, it’s stressful for us too. But the reason they do this is because they know they’ll get the most money by waiting until the last possible moment to commit to a shipment. That said, we usually give our customers a 5-hour window for pickup, and more often than not, when we secure a carrier, the pickup happens the same day. We work hard to keep things as smooth and fast as possible for you.

You also need to understand that usually, if a carrier seems unusually cheap, there’s a reason for it. A cheap rate often comes with a host of problems: bad reviews for not properly handling cars, underinsurance, refusal to repair damage, and frequent cancellations. In this industry, there are more bad carriers than good ones, and that’s why you get what you pay for. Low rates usually mean the carrier cuts corners, and those corners can be costly—sometimes even leading to significant damage to your car or worse, no pickup at all.

Because we know how many bad carriers there are in the industry, we’ve taken a proactive step to protect our customers. We’ve chosen to buy all the domain names in Southwest Florida so that we can work with the same reliable carriers over and over again, ensuring we have consistency and quality. By doing this, we can weed out the bad carriers, working only with the ones that have earned our trust and respect over time. This helps ensure a smoother experience for you and gives us control over the quality of service you receive.

Ultimately, auto transport can be an easy, stress-free process when you work with the right people. If you go for the cheapest option—especially one based overseas—you might find yourself in for a nightmare. You’ll probably wish you had just driven the car yourself! We're here to ensure that your experience is smooth, simple, and hassle-free.

Finally, a word about packing your car—many telemarketers will tell you that you can load your car up with whatever you want. This is usually a lie. Some carriers won’t allow anything in your car at all, but these telemarketers will make it seem like you can stuff your car like Noah’s Ark. In reality, most drivers will allow up to 100 pounds of items in the car, but only if it's below the window line. If you don’t disclose this to the company, the driver can show up, charge you whatever he wants, or worse yet, ask you to remove the items on the spot. Keep in mind that carriers are not household goods movers. If you pack too much, you risk having your car flagged by an inspector, who may decide to pull your car down and park it because it's now considered a moving violation for household goods.

Sometimes, people think they’re better off finding their own carrier, but my question is: How will you verify that the carrier has insurance? Are you just going to take their word for it? What if the deductible is too high and the insurance won’t cover the cost of fixing your car? What’s your recourse—leaving a bad review online? Keep in mind, carriers don’t get their work from online reviews, and many of them barely even have websites. All companies use the same load board, so if a carrier does a poor job, we can leave a bad review and make sure no other good companies like us will want to work with them. When you work with a professional broker, we’re here to ensure you’re getting a reliable carrier who’s been vetted and is held accountable.

We understand that this is a lot of information to take in, and we want to emphasize that this isn’t about bashing our competitors. It’s about providing you with the knowledge you need to navigate the auto transport industry confidently. Many customers simply don’t know the ins and outs of this business, and unfortunately, the bad companies out there make our job harder. Our goal is to educate you, so you can make an informed decision and have the best experience possible. We're here to ensure you receive honest, reliable service every step of the way. We’re not a gold coin that everyone loves—sometimes, for unforeseen reasons, we may not be able to find a carrier right away, and it might take longer than we like. But one thing you can always count on is that it will never be due to dishonesty or lack of effort on our part. We work hard to get your car moved as quickly and smoothly as possible.
